Telecommunications
WCNet – The Waller Community Network
High-speed Internet access in Waller is available
through the Waller Community Network (WCNet). WCNet was the result
of a cooperative effort of community leaders from many different
organizations to win a Community Network grant from the Texas Telecommunications
Infrastructure Board in 2002.
The $525,000 grant is administered by Waller ISD as a WCNet partner.
The three main goals of the project are to provide:

|
Free high-speed Internet access via public access sites
to members of the community who would not ordinarily have
access |

|
Low-cost information technology training to local citizens
via two Community Technology Centers so they may be equipped
for employment in the information economy |

|
Wireless high-speed Internet subscriptions to businesses
and residences within the Waller ISD as a mechanism to sustain
funding for the public access sites and training centers after
the grant period has concluded |
WCNet contracted with VectorLink
to provide these services, and current pricing may be obtained by
calling VectorLink at 936-931-5151. Businesses can subscribe to
Internet speeds up to T-1 levels.
WCNET promotes 21st century economic development by ensuring that
every citizen and business has the opportunity to develop the skills
and knowledge needed to participate fully in the information economy.
In the Community Technology Centers (CTC), local residents will
be able to complete accredited university courses and degrees online,
and will be able to complete advanced computer certifications without
leaving the community.
