WCNet – The Waller Community Network

High-speed Internet access in Waller is available through the Waller Community Network (WCNet). WCNet was the result of a cooperative effort of community leaders from many different organizations to win a Community Network grant from the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Board in 2002.

The $525,000 grant is administered by Waller ISD as a WCNet partner. The three main goals of the project are to provide:

Free high-speed Internet access via public access sites to members of the community who would not ordinarily have access

Low-cost information technology training to local citizens via two Community Technology Centers so they may be equipped for employment in the information economy

Wireless high-speed Internet subscriptions to businesses and residences within the Waller ISD as a mechanism to sustain funding for the public access sites and training centers after the grant period has concluded

WCNet contracted with VectorLink to provide these services, and current pricing may be obtained by calling VectorLink at 936-931-5151. Businesses can subscribe to Internet speeds up to T-1 levels.

WCNET promotes 21st century economic development by ensuring that every citizen and business has the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to participate fully in the information economy. In the Community Technology Centers (CTC), local residents will be able to complete accredited university courses and degrees online, and will be able to complete advanced computer certifications without leaving the community.

Our collaborative leadership team for the grant application process included representatives from the following organizations: Waller Independent School District, Prairie View A & M University, Waller County, the City of Waller, The City of Prairie View, the Waller Economic Development Corporation, the Waller Chamber of Commerce, Fort Bend Family Health Center (HAWC Clinic), Melanie Smith Memorial Library, San Bernard Electric Cooperative, Prairie View Interactive & Career Learning Center, Prairie View Alumni Center, Waller Baptist Church, St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnson-Phillip All Faiths Chapel, St. Francis Episcopal
